Under the unstable firmament of the Guaraní land, which held the storm, drawing flashes of electricity on its long canvas, the second day of competition of this captivating sport took place with its different disciplines. New continental marks were noted in some events that amazed the large audience present.
100M METRES
The COP Athletics Stadium witnessed the speed of men and their ability to defy physics. In this sense, in the final of the men’s 100m, Davonte Howell, from the Cayman Islands, was the fastest of all and set the clock at 9.98 seconds, giving his delegation its first gold medal. In turn, the champion once again broke his own junior Pan American record by going under the 10-second line.
In the women’s branch, something very particular happened: the Pan American record was also broken in the qualifying round, but the gold medal went to another participant. Yesterday, the Dominican Liranyi Alonso established a new continental record in the semifinal with a time of 11.08. However, the competitor came in second today in the final race behind Shaniqua Bascombe of Trinidad and Tobago, who won the gold medal.
SHOT PUT
Next, the medal event for the men’s Shot Put was held. There, the Argentine athlete Juan Manuel Arrieguez won the gold medal by throwing the element 18.39 meters, ahead of the Brazilians Vinicius Avancini and Alessandro Soares, who won silver and bronze, respectively.
LONG JUMP
To continue, the men’s Long Jump final was also held, under a constant rain that was giving in. In said competition, the Cuban Aniel Adrián Molina Gómez won the gold medal after a series of attempts where he demonstrated all his ability to lead the event. Jhon Valencia, from Colombia, won the silver medal, and Andrew Stone, from the Cayman Islands, won the bronze.
800M
The 800m event in the women’s branch also met its new champion and continental junior record holder: the Brazilian Sabrina Gabrieli Pena. The South American completed the race in 2:05.87 to reach first place on the podium. She was escorted by the Canadian Avery Pearson and the Venezuelan María Rojas; they also lowered the old Pan American mark set in Cali 2021, but not that of the Brazilian, the new continental monarch.
DECATHLON
The demanding multi-sport event found its winner. After the ten disciplines, the Cuban Josmi Sánchez scored more points than everyone and won the gold medal, adding one more for his delegation. In total, the Caribbean reached the line of 7750 points, followed by the Venezuelan Carlos Córdoba, who won silver with 7393 points, and the Chilean Max Moraga, who took bronze with a score of 7304.
