After a relentless day in which players battled through several rounds to reach the finals, this afternoon and evening revealed new champions in both the men’s and women’s events. Brazil was once again the standout, taking two gold medals.
The South American squad showed its strength in three of the four categories contested today. First, in women’s doubles, Brazil edged Puerto Rico in a five-set thriller (3-2), with Beatriz Mendonca and Karina Senaga sealing the victory. Later, in men’s doubles, Leonardo Iizuka and Felipe Doti dominated the United States 3-0 to capture another gold.
In singles, however, Iizuka’s luck ran out. After a strong run to the final, the Brazilian fell 4-2 to the United States’ Nandan Naresh, who claimed the gold medal. On the women’s side, Puerto Rico ended Brazil’s dominance thanks to Edmarie León, who stormed to the title with a commanding 4-0 win over Canada’s Natalie Chan.
Table tennis continues tomorrow with its fourth day of competition, as athletes push forward in their quest to reach Thursday’s medal matches, the grand finale of this discipline.
