On the fourth day of competition, the tennis tournament delivered pivotal results, sealing the spots for the top players in both singles and doubles. The next round promises high drama, where every point will bring them closer to the coveted gold medal.
But before reaching that point, each of the remaining contenders had to earn their place. That’s exactly what happened today, with electrifying matches played on the red clay courts of Rakiura.
MEN’S SINGLES
The day began with a clash between South American representatives. In the first match, Argentina’s Dante Pagani defeated Brazil’s Gustavo de Oliveira in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Later, Ecuador’s Emilio Camacho came from behind to beat Peru’s Nicolás Baena 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, booking his spot in the semifinals.
Shortly after, Brazil’s Joao Didoni overcame home favorite Alex Núñez in three sets, including a tight tie-break in the first. The last semifinalist emerged from the Caribbean: Puerto Rico’s Yannik Álvarez defeated Bolivia’s Santiago Lora 6-1, 6-3. These four winners will battle tomorrow for the two tickets to the grand final.
WOMEN’S SINGLES
In the women’s draw, South America shone again. Candela Vázquez and Sol Larraya (both from Argentina), Valentina Mediorreal (Colombia), and Camila Rodero (Chile) reached the final four after eliminating Catalina Delmás (Paraguay), Francesca Maguiña (Peru), Alysa James (Jamaica), and Sofía Meabe (Argentina), respectively.
MIXED DOUBLES
Today’s matches also determined the semifinalists in mixed doubles. On one side of the draw, the Argentine pair of Dante Pagani and Sofía Meabe will face Puerto Rico’s Aurora Lugo and Yannik Álvarez. On the other side, local duo Alex Núñez and Catalina Delmás will meet Colombia’s Juan Miguel Bolívar and Valentina Mediorreal for a place in the final.
DOUBLES FINALS SET FOR TOMORROW
Friday will crown the new Pan American champions in both the men’s and women’s doubles events. In the men’s category, the gold medal will be contested between Argentina and Ecuador, while in the women’s draw, the title will be decided in a clash between Mexico and Argentina.
