One of the oldest sports on the Olympic agenda, and present since the first Olympic Games of the modern era, also made its presence felt at the youth sports event of the year in the Americas. Wrestling could not be left out, and in its long day, it was the center of attention for many of those present at the Paraguayan Olympic Park.
Using only the upper body as a weapon, but also with the legs as an element of strength, the wrestlers fought today in six categories of the men’s branch from which the first medalists of this sport in ASU2025 came out.
QUADRUPLE GOLD FOR THE UNITED STATES IN THE DEBUT
Greco-Roman wrestling inaugurated its calendar this Wednesday at the Junior Pan American Games ASU2025 with an intense day at the Asunción Olympic Training Center. From early on, the preliminary fights lit up the atmosphere, and at night, the finals were held before a crowd that accompanied every movement of the gladiators with shouts, flags, and applause.
In the 60 kg category, the American Maxwell Black dazzled with his technical superiority and physical strength, essential attributes in a sport that demands power, resistance, and strategy. The gold was his, the silver for Ángel Segura of Mexico.
The excitement continued in the 67 kg, where the Ecuadorian Jeremy Peralta starred in an intense duel against the Cuban Yonat Veliz. With a tight 9–7, Peralta took the gold.
The North American supremacy was felt again in 77 kg, thanks to Rix Aydin, who dominated his final combat to give his country another gold medal. The representative of Venezuela took the silver.
In 87 kg, the American Jacobson Payton showed a great combination of strength and technique to overcome the Mexican Diego Macías, who took the silver.
The 97 kg category changed hands: the Venezuelan Juan Díaz was crowned champion after a highly disputed combat against the Mexican Tejo, who finished with the silver medal.
The night closed spectacularly in the 130 kg, with the imposing figure of the American Aden Attao, who imposed his strength to add the fourth gold of the day for his country.
Tomorrow the wrestling competition will continue with the women’s freestyle modality, which promises more emotion and new protagonists on the mat.
